On Saturday, SUNY Fredonia students will give away 1,000 free compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) bulbs at the Fredonia Farmers' Market. Lasting from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Church Street in Fredonia, the CFL giveaway coincides with Moving Planet Day - a worldwide day of action to promote solutions to the climate change crisis. Farmers' Market attendees can learn energy saving tips and receive two free CFL bulbs per person - one 13-watt and one 23-watt bulb. The giveaway is intended to help community members experience the benefits of using CFL bulbs. According to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), CFL bulbs last seven to 10 times longer and use 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs. Switching from incandescent bulbs to CFLs also helps the environment. As the NYSERDA website explains, "If every household in New York switched five bulbs to ENERGY STAR compact fluorescent bulbs, it could save $432 million in electric costs and greenhouse gas emissions reductions - the equivalent of taking 340,000 cars off the road." Generously funded through an Eco NRG grant, the CFL giveaway is sponsored by SUNY Fredonia's FACE Center, Campus Climate Challenge, and the Fredonia Farmers' Market. The event will be followed by Campus Climate Challenge's Moving Planet Day events at the gazebo in Barker Common of downtown Fredonia from 1 to 5 p.m. Source: www.observertoday.com
