Packaging films manufacturer Toray Plastics (America) has launched new Torayfan -Over-the-Mountain portfolio of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films for packaging industry.
The new films are designed to prevent food packages from bursting in high-altitude and low-atmospheric-pressure conditions during transportation.
Manufactured using modified polypropylene core layer, the new films use proprietary sealant, which provides superior seal performance.
Toray Industries subsidiary Toray Plastics (America) said that the seal strength and hermetic seals allows the package to maintain its integrity while protecting the oxygen and moisture barrier that allow food to stay fresh.
Torayfan Division product manager Amanda Whaley said: “With Toray’s OTM films the incidence of bags’ bursting can be significantly reduced or even eliminated.
“This innovation gives CPGs the confidence to distribute their products using traditional interstate highways directly over mountain passes.”
“It also opens up new business opportunities for smaller regional manufacturers, who will now be able to distribute products nationwide.”
According to studies, the new OTM films can survive altitudes of about 17,000ft prior to a leak and about 38,000ft prior to rupturing completely, Troy said.
Developed to allow for efficient, multi-channel distribution, the Toray’s OTM films can be used in the manufacture of pillows, pouches, and stand-up pouches (SUP) which are intended for salty and savory snacks, cookies, crackers, biscuits, and confectionery items.
Available in transparent, metallized, and white versions in a variety of barrier levels, the films are compatible with standard VFFS and HFFS equipment that run heat-sealable BOPP film.
In September, Toray introduced white, easy-to-peel PET lidding film, LumiLid XL7W, for use with refrigerated and frozen dairy foods.
