The African Union (AU) is planning to establish food safety authority along with a Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF), in order to strengthen trade and prevent food-borne diseases.
AU's Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources Ahmed El Sawalhy said that the authority will strengthen trade and improve the standard of living in the rural areas.
The new body will in the lines of the European Food Safety Authority, but will take into consideration aspects such as food safety, cultural, social, economical, political and even scientific peculiarities of the continent, reported AllAfrica.com.
Trade and Industry Minister Francois Kanimba said that the authority will lower food losses and boost food availability promote exports from the African countries, thereby increasing incomes, prosperity and wellbeing of the citizens.
