Shortly after separating its PowerTap product family from its CycleOps trainer and stationary bike brand, Saris Cycling Group announced steep retail price reductions for the power measurement line effective Thursday. Dealer margins are unchanged, Saris said.
“More and more cyclists are in the market for a power meter, but all too frequently price is a barrier to purchase. We’re happy to say that with our new pricing structure—owing to our dedicated focus on PowerTap—we’re able to lower this barrier,’ says Jesse Bartholomew, PowerTap and CycleOps category manager.
PowerTap has faced increased competition in the power market recently from brands including Stages Cycling, which offers a crank-based power meter starting at $700. Garmin and consumer electronics brand Pioneer also have plans to release pedal-based power systems.
G3 hubs, PowerTap’s best seller, now will carry a significantly reduced MSRP of $789, down from $1,299, with G3 alloy wheelsets at $999, down from $1,499. Carbon wheelsets now start at $2,199 for a PowerTap G3 hub with 46-millimeter-deep Reynolds carbon rims.
The Joule and Joule GPS computers will also see reductions in pricing, with the Joule lowered to $99 (from $169) and the Joule GPS reduced to $219 (from $269).
