Slab Casting and HR Projects Is Launched at Baosteel's Zhanjiang Base

On August 11, construction work started on the continuous casting project and hot rolling project at Chinese steel producer Baosteel's Zhanjiang steel base, as announced by Beijing-based state-owned China Metallurgical Group Co. (MCC) on August 15.

The continuous casting project consists of three two-strand continuous slab casters (two new 2,150 mm continuous slab casters to be constructed and one old 2,300 mm continuous slab caster from Baosteel's Luojing works to be upgraded) and their auxiliary facilities. The three continuous slab casters are expected to produce 8.75 million mt of slabs per year. Chongqing-province based Chinese engineering company CISDI Group Corp (CISDI), a subsidiary of MCC, is responsible for the design work, while MCC TianGong Group Corporation Limited (CTMCC) is the contractor for the continuous casting project.

Meanwhile, the 2,250 hot rolled steel production project at the Zhanjiang steel base is expected to produce 5.5 million mt of high-strength hot rolled products per year, and the main products include high-strength plate for containers, steel for railway carriages, high-grade pipeline steel, and steel for manufacture of medium-size and heavy trucks. CISDI is also responsible for the design work, while China MCC20 Group Corp. is the contractor.
