South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor is planning to build its first diesel engine plant in India in an effort to meet the increasing demand for cars that run on diesel.
Hyundai Motor India director of marketing and sales Arvind Saxena was quoted by The Wall Street Journal as saying that the car manufacturer had earlier halted its plans for a diesel-engine plant in India due to a lack of clarity on government policy.
Saxena, however, did not reveal the capacity of the plant and investments that Hyundai will incur at the plant.
The company, meanwhile, plans to source more diesel engines from South Korea in order to reduce the waiting periods for the diesel variants of its i20 hatchback and Verna sedan.
Hyundai said it will increase the import diesel engines from 7000 to 10,500 a month starting April from 7,000.
The company has a gasoline engines facility in the southern city of Chennai that can manufacture 600,000 engines per year.
