Nepal’s Ministry of Industry will set up a handicraft village in each of the five development regions of the country, in association with the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), Nepal Handicraft Federation and the Federation of Nepalese Cottage and Small Industry (FNCSI), Republica reported.
Ministry spokesperson, Joint-Secretary Yam Kumari Khatiwada said premises of the Cottage and Small Industry Development Committee’s (CSIDC) Surkhet and Kailali-based offices are the sites proposed for setting up the handicraft villages in Mid-western Development Region and in Far-Western Development Region, respectively.
Feasibility studies for sites in the Eastern Development Region, Western Development Region and Central Development Region have also been undertaken, he said.
Looking to further boost the handicraft sector and to facilitate better showcasing and promotion of handicraft items, the Ministry has decided to speed up and start the construction work of these villages during the current fiscal itself, the spokesperson said.
According to the Nepal Handicraft Federation, the country exported handicraft products worth NP Rs. 10 billion during last year.
