CareFusion Enters Into an Agreement to Purchase Brazilian Respiratory Technologies Company

CareFusion has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase Brazilian respiratory technologies company, Intermed Equipamento Medico Hospitalar.

Intermed is involved in manufacturing ventilators and respiratory care devices for infant, pediatric and adult patients that are used in hospitals in Brazil and across Latin America.

The acquisition allows CareFusion to expand its respiratory products portfolio in Brazil as well as across Latin America.

The financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

CareFusion chairman and chief executive officer Kieran Gallahue said Intermed brings a strong distributor network, local manufacturing capabilities and a new product portfolio that the company believes will serve as a base for global expansion efforts in Latin America.

"The acquisition of Intermed complements our global respiratory product platform and advances our strategy to expand outside of the U.S," Gallahue added.

Intermed founder Milton Rubens Salles said for more than 30 years, the company has supported the health care needs of Brazil by providing high-quality medical devices.

"CareFusion shares our values and passion to serve hospitals' and patients' respiratory needs and create additional opportunities for our people and products to continue to grow through investments in research and development and global expansion," Salles added.

The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to close during CareFusion's fiscal second quarter, which ends 31 December 2012.
