Craig Beevers Won The 2014 Title with The Word 'talaq'

Craig Beevers won the 2014 title with the word 'talaq'.

A Brit has been crowned the World Scrabble Champion for the first time since 1993, and only the second time ever.

Craig Beevers, from Guisborough near Middlesborough, competed against over 100 talented Scrabble enthusiasts from over 25 countries in 36 games during the tournament.

Beevers was declared the winner after a best-of-five showdown against Chris Lipe from New York, winning by three games to one.

As well as achieving the pinnacle for any Scrabble fan, he also picked up £3,000 in cash.

Beevers, who was UK champion back in 2009, won this year's world title with the word talaq, meaning a Muslim form of divorce, scoring him 42 points.

“I am absolutely thrilled to have won, it was a closely fought championship and Chris was a very impressive opponent to play," said Beevers.

The Scrabble Champions Tournament final took place today at the ExCel Centre, London, in association with Mattel and Mind Sports International.
