Swedish Cancer Institute (SCI), a cancer-care network in Washington, US, has acquired four Elekta's Versa HD systems.
Versa HD is a radiation treatment system that is intended for cancer management and treat a wide range of tumors in the body.
Versa HD is an advanced linear accelerator that can deliver traditional therapies for an expansive range of indications usually seen in the clinic, whilst also enabling treatment of cancers of complex nature that need targeting accuracy.
Replacing a Varian linear accelerator, SCI's new Versa HD systems will be installed and operated clinically further at SCI's facility on the Swedish/Edmonds campus.
SCI's center advanced targeted radiotherapies director Vivek Mehta said that the institute is relying on the new systems to serve as the principal linear accelerators across its network, to treat all types of cancer more efficiently and accurately.
"At the same time, the advanced features of Versa HD - especially the ultra-conformal Agility radiation beam shaping and High Dose Rate mode - will bring state-of-the-art radiation therapy for our most challenging cases to SCI's network facilities throughout the Greater Puget Sound area," Mehta added.
The advanced motion management technologies are critical to facilitate accurate and potent stereotactic radiation therapy [SRT] for early stage, inoperable lung tumors.
"Versa HD integrates these technologies and other solutions - such as 4D image guidance, and sophisticated patient immobilization and treatment planning - into a specialized package for lung cancer," Mehta said.
