Ms Jayalalitha Announced an Rs 700 Crore Scheme for Rehabilitation of Small Dyeing Units

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu – Ms Jayalalitha has formulated a proposal under which small and medium sized fabric dyeing units from all over the state, affected by the pollution control order of the courts, would be shifted to a new clusters to be set up in Erode, Salem, Karur and Namakkal districts.

Ms Jayalalitha announced an Rs 700 crore scheme for rehabilitation of small and medium dyeing units and textile industries while keeping pollution at a bay, The Hindu reported.

“Big fabric dyeing units had achieved zero-effluent discharge and the state government also had lent interest-free loan to set up 18 effluent treatment plants”, she said.

“But small and medium units could not set up treatment plants and the effluents from these units have polluted the Cauvery, Bhavani and Amaravathi rivers, other than damaging ground water”, she added.

“The objective of the government was to ensure sustained economic development and the cluster would provide employment to 10,000 persons”, she informed.

The Rs 700 crore would be mobilised from various ministries of the Central government and the rest would be contributed by the state government.
