Over 50 per cent of men aged 55 plus that took part in the survey were against removing 'boys' and 'girls' labels on toys.
iGen Insight have conducted a nationwide survey to find out whether the public is in support, or against, gender neutral categorisations of toys.
The firm asked over 2,000 UK men and women aged over 16 years old ‘Is the move to gender neutral categorisations of toys the right one?’
Overall opinion leans in favour, but the difference is only marginal, with 40 per cent answering ‘Yes’, 36 per cent answering ‘No’ and the remaining 24 per cent undecided.
However, the firm found that over 50 per cent of men aged over 55 disagreed with the move. Overall support does decline by age, but women amongst the same age group are still much more likely to support the movement (44 per cent), than men (23 per cent).
Younger people are much stronger advocates for the move away from gender labelling, with 64 per cent in support.
“Although it’s not possible for us to draw any definitive conclusions from this single poll, it certainly does point to some interesting age and gender divisions," said Claire Milner, research manager at iGen.
"With young people in much greater support of the move away from gender categorisation of toys, it suggests this issue will continue to have implications within the toy and games industry."
