Turkey exported apparel worth US$ 17.3 billion during 2013, indicating an increase of 8.3 percent compared to 2012, as per the latest data released by the Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporters Association (ITKIB).
According to the ITKIB data, Turkey exported clothing worth US$ 17.3 billion to 203 countries during last year, whereas during 2012, the country exported apparel amounting to US$ 16.3 billion.
The highest amount of exports were made from the women’s outerwear sector, with Turkey exporting women’s outerwear worth US$ 8.93 billion during 2013, accounting for 51 percent of the total apparel exports from the country during the period.
During 2013, the country exported men’s outerwear worth US$ 3.54 billion, clothing accessories totaling US$ 1.39 billion, home textiles made from cotton amounting to US$ 1.30 billion and US$ 491.49 million worth of other readymade articles.
According to the ITKIB data, Germany remained the main destination for Turkish apparel exports during 2013, with the country exporting garments worth US$ 3.71 billion last year to Germany, accounting for 21 percent of the overall apparel exports from Turkey.
The UK maintained second position with Turkey exporting apparel worth US$ 2.16 billion to the UK in 2013, followed by Spain with US$ 1.49 billion, France with US$ 1.12 billion, the Netherlands with US$ 910 million and Italy with US$ 712.51 million.
As per the ITKIB data, the European Union (EU) accounted for 74.1 percent of apparel exports from Turkey during last year, with Turkey exporting clothing worth US$ 12.88 billion to the EU, indicating a rise of 6.5 percent year-on-year.
