Images and details of the Subaru Legacy concept have been released ahead of its premiere at next week’s Los Angeles auto show, where it will preview the design for the next-generation Subaru Liberty.
The unveiling of the Legacy concept marks an early celebration of the mid-sizer’s 25th anniversary in 2014, and gives an insight into the Japanese manufacturer’s vision for the sixth-generation of the Legacy/Liberty model line.
Measuring 4930mm long and riding on a 2880mm wheelbase, the four-door, four-seat Subaru Legacy concept is 185mm longer than the current fifth-generation Subaru Liberty sedan as well as 130mm larger between the wheels, suggesting the next model will grow to almost large-car proportions and almost certainly offer improved interior and boot space.
The design of the Legacy concept represents an evolution of the brand’s new styling direction, taking cues from the Viziv and WRX concepts seen earlier this year.
Angular headlights with C-shaped LEDs flank a large, prominent, Audi-like hexagonal grille, and slim, vertical lower intakes add width to the contoured front bumper.
Heavily flared front wheel arches and a well-defined character line below the windowsills create a muscular stance, while a heavily raked roofline and rear windscreen and a short boot lid give the Legacy concept coupe-like proportions.
C-shaped tail-lights link the front design with the rear, as twin vertical exhaust outlets integrate effectively into the strong rear bumper.
Though not revealed in these images, Subaru says the Legacy concept interior “embodies dynamic and solid design” with a focus on “high functionality”.
Brown leather with blue accenting aims to create a premium yet sporty feel.
A smartphone-inspired multi-function display screen sits at the centre of the instrument panel, while Subaru says a “large floor console” that stretches from the front to the back of the cabin provides an information display for rear-seat passengers too.
The gearshift lever is angled towards the driver to emphasise the all-wheel-drive sedan’s sporting intent, and a head-up display linked to Subaru’s EyeSight driver assist system places more important information before the driver’s eyes.
Full details of the Subaru Legacy concept will be revealed in LA on November 20.
The sixth-generation Subaru Liberty is expected to go on sale in Australia in 2015, replacing the current model that launched in 2009.
