Surat Is Soon Likely to Get an International Fabric Resource Centre

India’s textile hub of Surat is soon likely to get an international fabric resource centre, which would serve as a one-stop solution for weavers and textile traders in the city and surrounding areas.

Surat to Soon Get International Fabric Resource Centre

The centre proposed by Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) president Kamlesh Yagnik, would house a wide-ranging collection of fabrics from across the globe.

Fabric processors, weavers and traders would also be able to get information like composition, technical aspects and market potential of various fabrics from the proposed centre, Times of India reported.

This would significantly contribute to growth of the man-made fiber (MMF) industry in the city and also boost exports, according to Mr. Yagnik.

Surat’s textile industry caters to around 40 percent of India’s overall demand for synthetic fabric, but the city’s exports stand at only Rs. 11 billion, due to lack of integration and unawareness regarding global fabric fashion trends among weavers and traders.

SGCCI has also embarked on the task of establishing an international fabric museum in Surat and has constituted a team of experts from the industry to collect fabrics that are in demand, globally, Mr. Yagnik said.

The fabrics so collected would be put up for display at the museum to keep the local weavers and traders updated regarding global demand, he added.

Information on technical specifications of the fabrics displayed at the museum would also be provided to help the weavers develop similar kind of fabrics, which in turn would boost exports, the SGCCI president said.

Mr. Yagnik, who recently assumed charge as the president of SGCCI, has also initiated several other initiatives for development of textile industry of the city. The initiatives include creation of a taskforce for carrying out studies for textile export enhancement from South Gujarat and impact of quality and innovation on textile sector profitability.
