US Steel Corp. confirmed Monday that it will lay off workers at its Lorian Tubular Operations plant in Ohio, although the brief statement did not indicate how many workers would be affected or when the layoffs would be implemented.
“As a result of business conditions, we are adjusting production at our Lorain Tubular Operations,” said Sarah Cassella, a public affairs representative for US Steel, in a statement from the company. “While we have made every effort to maintain employment levels, unfortunately we must now adjust our workforce to match our production levels.”
Tom McDermott, president pro-tem of Local 1104, declined to comment to local news outlets, referring questions to US Steel’s corporate offices in Pittsburgh.
Some market insiders attribute the move to last week’s antidumping ruling regarding OCTG imports, which did not place tariffs on South Korea, the biggest exporter of steel tubing to the US. The imports consist of the same type of steel tubing produced at US Steel.
