The global LED light bulb retail pricing has been falling steadily. According to studies, the price of 40W retrofit LED light bulbs dropped on average by 2.2% to US$19/unit in August 2012. The lowest price available was below US$10/unit. The price of 60W retrofit LED light bulbs fell slightly by 1.2% with average pricing around US$30.70/unit and the lowest price was US$18/unit, according to the data.
In general, the market believes retail pricing of LED light bulbs below US$10/unit is only likely to appear in certain markets. Markets such as the US, South Korea, and Taiwan have all seen LED light bulb products at this price range. In China, some LED light bulb products have been quoted at US$5/unit.
The price fall in August was the most significant in Japan, at around 10.1%, according to the studies.
In contrast, the price of 40W retrofit LED light bulbs in the US market showed an increase of 3.1% in August, with average pricing around US$17.5/unit. The price of 40W retrofit LED light bulbs in the UK and Germany fell 2.5% and 0.9%, respectively.
In Japan and the US, the price of 60W retrofit LED light bulb fell by 8.2% and 5.4%, respectively.
