The Next-Generation Aston Martin Sports Cars Will Be Powered by New V8s

The next-generation Aston Martin sports cars will be powered by new V8s based on engines from Mercedes-Benz performance division AMG.

British brand Aston and Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler have confirmed their intention to form a technical partnership that would also see Mercedes-Benz provide electric and electronic architecture for future Astons.

Both firms have signed a letter of intent that is set to be formalised later this year. The supply agreement is one-way but Daimler would acquire a five per cent equity in Aston Martin, joining existing investors DAR and Investindustrial that own a controlling stake.

Daimler would have an observer status on the Aston board but no voting rights.

Astons featuring the Mercedes components are not expected to surface for another few years, while the sports cars will continue to be built at the company’s headquarters in Gaydon, England.

It’s not the first time AMG engines have been supplied to another company. Supercar maker Pagani has borrowed V12 engines for both the Zonda and the current Huayra.

Aston Martin product development director Ian Minards said AMG was a key supplier target but emphasised that the British company would be keeping its engineering DNA intact.

“We have selected AMG specifically as the basis for this powertrain development process,” Minards said. “Working with Mercedes-AMG in this way, while of course remaining independent and preserving the unique character and style of Aston Martin that has been the mainstay of the company throughout its 100-year history, points to a very bright future for the company as it starts its second century in business.”
