Kitex Garments,which has a manufacturing unit at Kizakkambalam in Kerala's Ernakulam district,has shelved its plan to set up an apparel manufacturing unit in the South Indian state.
The company would now implement its Rs.2.62 billion expansion plan either in China or Sri Lanka,Mr.Sabu M Jacob,managing director of Kitex told a press conference.
He said the proposed apparel unit would have created new employment opportunities for around 4,000 people,but the company is not going ahead with setting up of the new unit as the local village panchayat has not been renewing its license.
Kitex is Rs.5.5 billion company which has a vertically integrated manufacturing unit with a capacity of 650,000 pieces per day.
Currently,the company employs about 8,000 persons,who make apparels,especially infant wear,for global retailers like Mothercare,Toys'R'US,Jockey,Gerber,etc.
Mr.Jacob said the company will soon open a marketing office in the US.Kitex also has plans to launch its own brand in the global market very soon.
