Mercedes-Benz has released a clip of its new turbocharged V6 Formula One engine destined to compete in the 2014 season.
Recorded completing a simulated lap of the 5.8km Monza circuit in Italy, using a development version of the turbocharged 1.6-litre Mercedes AMG V6, the clip is music to the ears of F1 fans.
As a preview of the season to come, the sound of the engine’s 15,000rpm rev limit and single turbocharger is matched to the visuals of a lap of the circuit as seen on the F1 team’s ‘Driver-in-the-Loop’ simulator.
Renault was the first manufacturer to unveil its 2014 F1 powerplant, showing off its 600hp (447kW) unit in June.
The new engine format sees a switch from the existing naturally aspirated 2.4-litre V8 units, and includes an electric motor that provides a 120kW power boost. The new system, officially dubbed ‘MGU-K’ (motor generator unit kinetic), promises twice the power and 10 times the performance effect of the current cars’ KERS unit.
Round one of the 2014 Formula One World Championship kicks off in March.
