Several Overseas Textiles and Handicraft Firms Are Now Participating in Indian Trade Fairs

Several overseas textiles and handicraft firms are now increasingly participating in Indian trade fairs and shopping festivals in Malaysia, which is adversely impacting the business of Indian entrepreneurs in Malaysia, according to Bernama.

In view of the same, the Malaysian Indian Textiles and General Stores Association (MITA) Secretary Maheswary Ramasamy has urged the Malaysia’s Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry to not to grant any further permits to domestic Malaysian event management companies to introduce overseas traders in Malaysia.

Indian trade fairs organized by the Malaysian event management companies afford an opportunity to producers from countries like India, Bangladesh and Pakistan to display their goods before Malaysian traders.

However, over time the actual objective of the fairs has been lost, as the overseas traders started retailing their products to local customers through the trade fairs. This has badly hit the Indian entrepreneurs in Malaysia, also compelling some of them to cease their businesses, Ms. Maheswary said.
