Indicating a year-on-year fall of 2.29 percent, textile and clothing exports from Tunisia dropped to 483 million Tunisian dinars (MTD) in June 2013, according to the June 2013 economic letter of the Technical Centre for Textiles (CETTEX).
As per the CETTEX data, textile exports dipped by 13.6 percent year-on-year during the month, while clothing exports dropped by 0.39 percent, African Manager reported.
During the period, knitwear exports to France, Spain and the Netherlands grew both in terms of volume and value. Meanwhile, exports to Italy grew by 2.54 percent in value-terms, despite an 8.37 percent fall in volume-terms.
For textile industry, fibre exports grew by 43 percent during the review period, while all other segments posted negative export growth in terms of value as well as volume.
The drop was mainly registered in textile exports to France and Italy. Exports to France dipped by 10.62 percent in terms of value and 0.07 percent in volume-terms, while those to Italy dipped by 21.78 percent in value-terms and 40.45 percent in terms of volume.
While exports are plummeting, imports for June 2013 grew slightly by a 0.51 percent to 372 MTD, over June 2012.
Analysis for January-June 2013 show that Tunisia’s textile and clothing exports to the UK grew by 34.6 percent year-on-year, to Germany by 17.7 percent, Spain by 9.8 percent, the Netherlands by 5.6 percent, France by 3.7 percent and to Belgium by 2.9 percent. However, exports to Italy dipped by 6.5 percent during the period.
On the import-side, imports from Turkey grew by 36.3 percent year-on-year, Portugal by 27.9 percent, China by 9.8 percent, Spain by 9.2 percent and Germany by 5.9 percent, while imports from France, Belgium and Italy plummeted by 3.2 percent, 3.6 percent and 9.6 percent, respectively.
Segment-wise, mesh fabric imports grew by 52.08 percent year-on-year and fibre imports by 8.46 percent, while denim fabric imports decreased by 2.36 percent, yarn by 13.12 percent, and technical fabrics by 0.98 percent.
