The Subaru WRX STI has been confirmed to make its world premiere at next week’s Detroit auto show.
Subaru of America announced the planned US unveiling this week, though remains tight-lipped on details, releasing only one image (pictured above) at this stage.
Based on the all-new fourth-generation Subaru WRX (pictured below) unveiled at the Los Angeles auto show in November, the next-gen WRX STI is due to go on sale in Australia from April, around one month after the launch of the regular WRX.
The new STI is expected to improve on the 221kW/407Nm and 4.9-second 0-100km/h sprint achieved by its predecessor’s 2.5-litre unit. With powertrain details still yet to be confirmed, an uprated 2.5-litre engine is set to be retained to further cement the model’s sporting intentions, rather than relying on an enhanced version of the new WRX’s 199kW/349Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre flat four-cylinder engine.
The new WRX STI will again pair a six-speed manual transmission with all-wheel drive, and feature sports styling, handling and braking upgrades over the regular WRX.
All will be revealed when the 2014 Detroit auto show opens its doors on January 13.
