LED Light Bulbs'penetration Rate Likely to Rise to 60% in 2015

In the Taiwan market, LED light bulbs accounted for 50% of all types of light bulbs in 2014 and the penetration rate is likely to rise to 60% in 2015, according to Philips Taiwan general manager Edward Po.

There is demand for 20-25 million light bulbs of all types in Taiwan a year, Po said. For LED light bulbs in particular, the Taiwan government implemented compulsory compliance with national standards in July 2014, Po indicated.

Sales prices for new LED light bulbs in compliance with such standards have appeared to be relatively steady and therefore price drops in the near future are expected to be within a single-digit range, Po said.

As the Taiwan LED light bulb market has become mature, consumers' purchase consideration will shift from power savings to safety, Po indicated, adding blue light and stroboscopic effect are two major problems in the safety of LED light bulbs.

Philips on January 15 launched 6.5W, 8.5W, 11W and 14W new LED light bulbs featuring low stroboscopic effect, no blue light and optimal light mix in the Taiwan market, Po noted. Philips has obtained photobiological safety certification for its no-blue-light technology from IEC and its light-mix technology produces light most close to sunlight, Po stressed.
