Diversified Technologies Has Introduced a New Pasteurization System

Diversified Technologies has introduced a new pasteurization system, which eliminates the use of heat and chemicals. The new system, which uses PEF (pulsed electric field) technology, does not alter the flavor of liquefied food products, the company said.

The PEF Pasteurization System is capable of achieving a > 5 log bacteria kill without heat or chemicals. It is suitable for juices, yogurt, and other foods that can be pumped.

The system uses brief pulses of very high voltage to pasteurize the liquified food product in a chamber. It generates electrical pulses at up to 60 kV/cm field strength with power levels from 150 kW to 750 kW. It is custom engineered to process from 50 l/hr up to 10,000 l/hr throughput.

According to the company, the PEF Pasteurization System provides full control over pulse and frequency and uses less energy than conventional pasteurization methods. The new systems are now available for laboratory and full-scale production applications.
