Additional production at 2012 year end may push polysilicon spot price below US$20/kg Nuying Huang,Hsinchu;Jackie Chang,DIGITIMES[Wednesday 20 June 2012]The spot price of polysilicon has been falling since the market downturn in 2011.The current spot price is around US$22-25/kg and is likely to drop below US$20/kg due to additional production by the end of 2012,according to industry sources.
According to Quincy Lin,chairman of Taiwan-based solar cell maker Neo Solar Power(NSP),polysilicon firms did add new production lines in 2011,hence by end of 2012,there will be more supplies of polysilicon. This may push the price of polysilicon below US$20/kg.Nevertheless,said Lin,the timing of this occurrence is unpredictable.
Lin added that NSP has been working with polysilicon firms that have great competitive strengths. However, the firm's original plan to enter the production of solar wafers will have to wait because of the market downturn. The solar wafer segment has been suffering the most losses among the supply chain.
