Ishida Europe has introduced a new high speed leak detector, which will identify leaks in packaging to minimize spoilage in pre-packed retail food products.
The new Ishida AirScan rectifies leaks at speeds of up to 180 packs per minute, while maintaining optimum gas fill for each sealed modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) pack.
This leak detector employs advanced laser technology to identify leaks of CO2 from holes as small as 0.5mm in sealed MAP packs, the company said.
The hassle free integration of Ishida AirScan into existing production lines allows leak detection on packs containing a variety of foods such as fresh, cooked and cured meat, poultry, seafood, fruit, salads, vegetables, cheese and ready meals.
Ishida Europe quality control manager Alan Mutch said: "With retailers and suppliers under pressure to minimize food waste, packaging leaks have been associated with almost 500,000 tonnes of food wasted in production each year.
"Compromised packaging can lead to bacterial spoilage, reduced shelf-life and a damaging rise in complaints and returns. This can result in increased cost of production, loss of brand image and reputation, and the heightened risk of retailer fines."
The Ishida AirScan will be available as part of the company's quality control range, which also includes X-ray inspection systems, checkweighers, weigh-price-labellers, seal testers and vision systems.
Last year, the company launched new single and twin high speed snacks packing systems, which can weigh and pack potato crisps at up to 150 bags per minute per tube.
