Duke Energy Carolinas and its sister utility Duke Energy Progress are upgrading electric meters for 240,000 customers, one small piece of the nation’s gradual shift toward “smart meters.”
About 68,000 of the meters have already been replaced, Duke (NYSE: DUK) spokeswoman Paige Layne said. The deployment includes about 23,000 large homes and small businesses in Wake and Durham counties, and about 217,000 elsewhere in the Carolinas.
