A new teaser image of the Toyota Hybrid R has revealed the upcoming concept will be a high-performance petrol-electric model based on the Yaris city car.
Speculation was rife that the Hybrid R concept would preview the fruit of Toyota’s partnership with BMW, possibly a successor to themid-sized Supra sports car, after the Japanese manufacturer released an image of the car’s badge last week.
But the new image – visible in greater detail courtesy of some digital brightening by Autocar – reveals a modified version of the Toyota Yaris, supporting subsequent reports that the Hybrid R would be based on an existing production model.
Befitting of the racy Hybrid R badge, the concept is set to be far from a regular Yaris. Autocar reports that in place of that car’s usual engines, producing up to 80kW, the concept will sport a 295kW hybrid powertrain featuring technology from Toyota’s entrant into the Le Mans 24 Hours race.
Official details of the Toyota Hybrid R concept will be revealed when the petrol-electric pocket rocket debuts at the Frankfurt motor show on September 10.
