Supima Announced School Participation From Kent State

As the annual Supima Design Competition approaches, Supima has announced school participation from Kent State, the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Rhode Island School of Design and the Savannah College of Art and Design.

The students ready themselves to compete for the chance of a lifetime. Just being able to show their designs on stage at New York Fashion Week is already an incredible opportunity, the start of a career and an introduction to the real, working world of fashion.

“The Supima Design Competition is so worthwhile for the selected few of our talented students. The competition stresses just what we teach, innovation, design creativity, quality and high standards,” says Colette Wong, Dean of Fashion at FIT.

Each year, at the recommendation of participating schools, Supima chooses eight students to participate in the Supima Design Competition.  “This is my third year as mentor for RISD. This is real world experience for our students. It’s such a great venue and creative opportunity,” says Catherine Andreozzi, Department Head, Apparel Design, RISD.

Dean Michael Fink of SCAD feels, “It’s an amazing opportunity for our students to show in New York during Fashion Week. At this stage in their career, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. The energy that they have and the OCD behavior it produces, that we all love about fashion! Yes, to win is an honor but just being involved is beyond their expectations, with professional models and makeup and hair people.”

Faculty mentor at Kent State University, Sherry Schofield says, “As an educator, there is nothing more rewarding than watching your students succeed; but then, I’ve never had one of them present their own designs during New York Fashion Week, so maybe there is something better! I think that both Will and Sylvia have the potential to not only show at fashion week, but to win the competition!”

And it wouldn’t be a show without the support of Supima’s brand partners. This year’s supporters include AG Jeans, Agave, Brooks Brothers, Bloomingdale’s, Kurabo, Aveda, Tumbling Colors and Pantone.  By supplying fabrics, insight and overall support, these generous companies are giving back to the next generation of fashion stars.
