Food packaging and processing company Tetra Pak's Indian packaging material facility in Chakan, Pune has received Platinum certification from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
The packaging materials facility received the certification based on an assessment of the site in six categories including sustainability, water conservation, energy conservation, indoor environmental quality, material conservation as well as innovation.
Various initiatives were undertaken at the Chakan site to develop it into an environmentally sustainable site.
The initiatives include the installation of solar panels, rain water harvesting, re-use of waste water and air conditioning from the waste heat of generators.
Tetra Pak South Asia markets managing director Kandarp Singh said the certification recognizes the company's commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable efforts in making the Chakan facility a green site.
"The Chakan facility is an example of generating sustainable growth for customers with minimum environmental impact," Singh added.
According to Tetra Pak, the certification is said to be the highest recognition for sustainable building design, which is equivalent to the US Green Building Council (USGBC)'s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
