Samsung Switches to Intel Atom for Galaxy Tab 3 Tablet

Consumer electronics conglomerate Samsung is to use an Intel Atom "Clovertrail" microprocessor in its forthcoming Galaxy Tab 3 model, the tablet computer that will go head to head with Apple's iPad.

Intel's low-power system-on-a-chip will be used in preference to Samsung's own in-house developed and manufactured ARM-based microprocessors - making Samsung one of the first to use Intel in a tablet device in preference to ARM.

The part will feature on the 10.1" Tab 3, model GT-P5210. Based on the Clovertrail development, it will feature dual cores and hyper-threading technology. It will also sport a built-in Imagination Technologies PowerVR SGX 544MP graphics engine.

The chip will clock at a maximum of 1.6 gigahertz (GHz).

The tablet will also have a screen with a resolution of a "mere" 1280 by 800 and will run Android 4.2.2, aka Jelly Bean.

The decision by Samsung to use an Intel part indicates that the latest range of Intel Atom microprocessors may finally have caught up with ARM in terms of power-performance.

In June, the semiconductor giant will be unveiling its latest line of i-series microprocessors - new i3, i5 and i7 chips for desktops, laptops and "ultrabooks" - as well as its latest Atom parts.

However, other Galaxy Tab tablet computers will feature Samsung's own Exynos parts.
