RMG Factory Workers in Bangladesh Received Fire Safety Training Under The Crash Programme

More than 3,000 mid-level readymade garment (RMG) factory workers in Bangladesh received fire safety training under the crash programme launched by Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

About 3,359 workers from 379 factories of Ashulia, Banani, Rampura, Mirpur, Gazipur, Mohakhali, Malibagh and Badda got training in 12 batches at workshops organized by BGMEA’s safety cell during the last few weeks.

The programme has now been launched in the port city of Chittagong, BGMEA General Secretary Ehsanul Fattah said.

The programme focuses on reinforcing fire safety measures in its member factories, by imparting training to workers and managers of these factories in phases. These workers would in turn train their subordinates.

The training module includes topics like reasons of fire in RMG factories, fire fighting tactics, fire dousing system and efficient use of various fire fighting equipments, safe evacuation, fire drills and fire safety plans.

BGMEA, apex body of Bangladesh’s apparel industry, launched the training programme following the fire incidence at Tazreen Fashions Ltd in November last year which claimed lives of 112 workers.

The programme that BGMEA is running, with assistance of the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence, was initiated by Labour and Employment Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju on December 10, 2012.
