The online sales of clothing and accessories in Mexico grew 23 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2013, according to an analysis prepared by online shopping site Mercado Libre.
The analysis states that according to the data provided by the National Chamber of Apparel Industries (CANAIVE), the apparel sector of Mexico has one of the highest rates of sales barring online selling, representing 10 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of all the manufacturing industries in the country, reports Mexican newspaper El Informador.
However, according to the shopping site’s analysis, the digital revolution drives the apparel firms to be part of the online industry as a way of approaching the customers directly.
Francisco Ceballos, director-general of Mercado Libre, said online sales trend is mostly seen in the categories for womenswear, especially pants, blouses and innerwear, whereas for men it is jackets, sportswear and shorts.
According to the study conducted by Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) Mexico, 57 percent of internet users made online purchases in the country in 2012, of which the clothing was the second highest popular online purchase, he added.
In this regard, Mr. Ceballos said that the apparel industry of the country has the potential to grow with the help of internet through e-commerce, where users can select and purchase items in a more personalized manner, thereby improving the shopping experience.
