Lee Biing-jye, chairman of Taiwan-based LED epitaxial wafer and chip maker Epistar, has indicated he does not object to partnerships or technology transfers between Taiwan- and China-based LED makers because Taiwan's LED industry should be open internationally, but the Taiwan government must make sure such cross-strait deals abide by the law.
Lee's talk comes in the wake of China-based LED chip maker Sanan Optoelectronics' stake investment in Taiwan-based fellow maker Formosa Epitaxy and rumors about China-based LED chip maker Elec-Tech International planning to partner with Taiwan-based fellow maker Genesis Photonics.
Commenting on China LED makers recruiting experts from Taiwan peers, Lee indicated that such recruitment is normal but Taiwan's personnel must know what is legal and what isn't.
It is legal for Taiwan personnel to bring along their knowledge and work experience to China, but it is illegal to replicate Taiwan-based fellow makers' patented technologies at their new employers, Lee stressed.
