The Edited Verbal Questioned The Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Roll out

The edited verbal report from yesterday's House of Commons proceedings about Energy and Climate Change questioned the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change(Chris Huhne)about the smart meter roll out.

Huhne stated:"...The total cost of the programme is estimated to be about£11 billion and the benefits are estimated to be about£18 billion,so there will be£7 billion of benefits..."

He continued:"...A very important part of this programme is education.Smart meters will work only if the consumer understands how to use them effectively to get the best value for money out of them.We are drawing a very clear distinction between education and sales practice because we do not want the installation of smart meters to be an opportunity for unscrupulous sales practices...."

Opus Energy signed up to Which's smart meter promise of'no selling just installing'in December.Charlie Crossley Cooke,Opus Energy's Managing Director, commented at the time:".We want customers to have confidence in the smart meter roll-out programme and believe they are entitled to a hassle-free installation process...."
