Digital media has experienced a surge in popularity since it was first introduced to the general public. With mobile technology, streaming video, and other digital capabilities widely available, it is only natural that the entertainment industry has embraced the innovation that has driven the success of digital media. An article on Internet Retailer explains that the entertainment industry is taking full advantage of this new technology--which is driving revenue. Greg Osberg, a publishing professional, agrees that digital media is the way of the future. But he highlights the fact that it is changing not only the entertainment industry, but also the publishing arena.
According to the article, Ernst & Young conducted a study regarding the growth of digital media within the entertainment field. The company surveyed 34 CEOs, all of who lead major media and entertainment corporations, to find out how this new technology is impacting their revenue. The bottom line, the article reports, is that "half of the CEOs believe digital distribution will increase their total revenue and margins by at least 10 percent within the next three years. When asked which technologies are driving this double-digit growth in digital, 79 percent of CEOs said tablets."
The survey also reveals that the CEOs who participated in the activity are encouraged by the increase in digital media demand. Global Media and Entertainment Leader John Nendick, of Ernst & Young, asserts: "CEOs are undeterred about the role digital [media] will play in their futures. There is a heightened optimism from a few years ago when industry leaders were more tentative about the potential of digital. All of the CEOs we spoke with understand that digital is probably the single most important factor--impacting their ability to grow both revenues and margins."
Osberg agrees that digital media will play an integral role in the future of the entertainment industry; however, he is realistic about the overarching effects that this technology will have on society as a whole. First and foremost, he notes, it has already shown its value in the publishing sphere.
"For publishers to be successful in charging for digital content, it is extremely important for them to customize their content and provide unique features by platform, rather than simply repurposing their content across all platforms," comments Greg Osberg.
