Australian Paper Has Been Under "Intense Competitive Pressure"

Australian Paper has been under "intense competitive pressure"from cheap imported papers and its export markets have been significantly impact as a result, according to the company's CEO Jim Henneberry.

Releasing the company's 2011 Sustainability Report, Henneberry said that despite the difficulties, the steps the company has taken to improve the sustainability of its operations has strenghtended its position in a "difficult" marketplace.

"Significant progress has been made to increase production of renewable biofuel at Australian Paper's Maryvale Mill by 13 per cent over the previous year," he said.

"This has resulted in a reduction in electricity consumption equivalent to the yearly greenhouse gas emissions from around 10,000 cars."

Australian Paper acquired the assets of local manufacturer Australian Envelopes after it was placed into voluntary receivership in July 2011, making Australian Paper's Preston plant the largest enevelop manufacturing facility in Australia.

The Preston plant has since achieved Australian Forestry Standard Chain of Custody certification for its envelope manufacturing operations.
