Opel Is Planning to Launch Three New Powertrains

Opel, the subsidiary of US carmaker General Motors (GM) is planning to launch three gasoline and diesel family engines which will renew the company's current powertrain portfolio.

The company said the new powertrain will offer reduction in fuel consumption and emissions as well as achieve torque and noise reduction.

Opel has however revealed the details of only one of the three new powertrains and added that it will unveil all the three new engine families within 12 months.

According to Opel, the first new engine will be a turbocharged, 1598 cc, 1.6litre four-cylinder petrol engine featuring direct injection and Start/Stop technology.

The new engine is expected to deliver a peak power of up to 200hp at 4,700 rpm, and a maximum torque of about 300Nm at 1,700 rpm, further offering enhanced fuel economy and 13% reduced CO2 emissions than its previous powertrains.

Opel said that the latest version of the company's 2.2 ECOTEC direct engine will be used to power the new Astra OPC, which will generate an output of 206kW/280 hp.

Production of the engines will begin in late 2012 at its Szentgotthardt plant in Hungary.
