2013 Living Wage Campaign Is Launched by Sactwu

The COSATU-affiliated Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU) launches its 2013 Living Wage Campaign with a National Bargaining Conference to be held later this coming week (28 Feb-3 March 2013), in Cape Town.

Just over 200 shop stewards representing over 100 000 clothing, textile, footwear, leather and related sectors from all parts of South Africa will attend the Conference.

Over the last month and a half, the union has collected about 16 000 living wage demands from its members in just over 1 600 workplaces nationally.  These demands have now been provincially reconciled. The Bargaining Conference will now consolidate it into more coherent national sectoral demands, backed up by an aggressive national program of action.

SACTWU negotiates annually, in 3 national bargaining councils (clothing, textiles, leather), 2 provincial bargaining councils (canvass goods in Gauteng; laundry in KZN), 6 company group level negotiations (such as in Sheltered Employment) and in just over 80 plant level bargains.
