LG's Optimus G Smartphone Will Run a Faster Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Processor

The successor to LG's Optimus G smartphone, due sometime in the third quarter, will run a faster Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, the companies announced late Wednesday.

The 800 series chip is notable for integrating support for faster LTE Advanced cellular networks and 802.11ac Wi-Fi, which is capable of speeds of more than 1 Gbps.

The 800 processor will also deliver up to 75% better performance than the S4 Pro processor now used in Optimus G phones, both companies said. LG has not named the coming Optimus G smartphone successor or provided other details on carriers, a shipping date or recommended pricing.

"The result of this collaboration will in many ways be the industry's best smartphone by which all other devices will be measured," said Jong-seok Park, CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications, in a statement. The Snapdragon 800 is also reported to be the Qualcomm chip behind the Samsung Galaxy S4 variant for LTE Advanced networks, according to various sources.

In early June, Qualcomm announced its Snapdragon 800 will run in Windows RT 8.1 tablets, convertibles and notebooks when they ship later this year.

When introduced in January, Qualcomm said the 800 series processors would provide 75% "better performance" than its S4 Pro, which it said reaches 1.7 GHz. The higher speeds in the 800 come from Krait 400 CPU's in a quad configuration. Qualcomm said the 800 will have an enhanced asynchronous symmetric multiprocessing design for sensing power and control to improve battery life.

The Snapdragon 800 also supports video capture, playback and display in Ultra HD, which is four times as dense as 1080p HD. Qualcomm's IZat location technology is also supported, for more accurate navigation and exact locations.

The 800 will compete with the Nvidia Tegra 4, a quad-core processor based on ARM's Cortex-A15 design, already in use in the Nexus 10 tablet.
