According to the company, the engines will be SKYACTIV-D 2.2litre four-cylinder, dual-stage turbocharged diesel powerplants, which are expected to enhance the performance and deliver improved fuel economy.

The features of the new racing engine include 14:1 low compression ratio, a two-stage turbocharger and a 5,200rpm redline.

Mazda said that the new racing version powertrain will deliver up to 20% reduction in fuel consumption, 20% reduced internal engine friction and 10% reduced weight, when compared to its current production 2.2litre MZR-CD diesel engine.

The engines are being jointly developed by Mazda Motor (MMC), Mazda North American Operations and SpeedSource Engineering.

Mazda said that it has already started the dyno testing of new powertrain and its on-track testing is scheduled to begin by late 2012.
