In the week ended August 5, coal shipments from the Port of Newcastle in Queensland, the coal producing state of Australia, totaled 2.26 million mt, according to Newcastle Port Corporation. The figure constitutes a decrease of 23 percent compared to the previous week ended July 29, in which a week-on-week decrease of 12.6 percent in coal shipments had been observed.
In the period of August 1-5, Newcastle port exported 1.98 million mt of thermal and coking coal, while the port authority forecasts that Newcastle port will ship a total of 11.5 million mt for the whole of August. In August 2012, Newcastle port had exported almost 10.1 million mt of thermal and coking coal.
Anglo American, Peabody Energy, Rio Tinto and Xstrata are some of the larger exporters to ship coal from Newcastle port.
