Three Has Announced It Will Be Recruiting Almost 800 New Staff by The End of 2014

Three has announced it will be recruiting almost 800 new staff by the end of 2014.

The majority of the roles will be based at its Glasgow offices with the addition 380 telesales staff, making the total employees close to 1,000. However, the rest of the jobs will either be in its retail stores or it its Maidenhead headquarters.

The company also announced it would be spending £3m on upgrading the Glasgow premises, including adding new buildings to house the extra workforce.

Scottish Enterprise, a non-departmental government organisation, will contribute £1.8m towards the development in Glasgow, whilst Skills Development Scotland is putting £270,000 into training citizens for the jobs.

"We are experiencing a surge in demand for smartphones and we're supporting that with a network that delivers a great internet experience," said Dave Dyson, CEO of Three UK.

"We have ambitious plans for growth and the expanded team in Scotland has a huge role to play in realising them. Glasgow's can-do attitude has made it a natural choice."

Although Three is still the smallest of the main UK operators, it looks set to become the second to offer 4G services. It has bought a portion of spectrum from EE – the company formed from T-Mobile and Orange – after the European Commission ruled it had to sell some off as a condition of its merger.

Three managed to get the 2x15MHz of EE's 1800MHz, which has been liberalised by Ofcom to be used for 4G services. However, the operator now has to wait for EE to clear the spectrum so it is free for Three's use, which it doesn't have to do until September next year, according to the rules of its merger.

Three is still likely to participate in the upcoming spectrum auction in December, which will sell off the freed up frequencies from the digital television switchover.
