Apple Did Some Serious App Store Culling in October with 50k Duds Dumped

Apple’s efforts to Make The App Store Great Again appear to be paying dividends, with the company purging more than 47,00 apps during the month of October.

Data from Sensor Tower (via 9to5Mac) shows a 238% increase on the number of apps removed during September, which was also 3.4-times more than the average month previously.

In September the firm said it was draining the swamp of all of the abandoned titles as well as those who didn’t meet App Store guidelines.

Apple also removed those apps that crashed immediately upon launch, in an effort to assist iOS and macOS users sift through the dregs while forcing developers to clean up their acts.

According to the data 28% of the apps culled last month were games, many of which likely to be clones of the store’s most popular titles.

“To make it easier for customers to find great apps that fit their needs, we want to ensure that apps available on the App Store are functional and up-to-date," Apple said at the time.

“We are implementing an ongoing process of evaluating apps, removing apps that no longer function as intended, don’t follow current review guidelines, or are outdated.”

If you’re the user of one of the apps that fell victim to the cull today, you probably won’t notice any difference.

Those apps will continue to function for existing users. The cull still action leaves over 2 million apps available in the iOS App Store.
