The Nepal Government has decided to set up a handicraft village in Kharipati, a town in Kathmandu Valley, and would shortly constitute a committee to decide on how to best manage the village.
The committee would also help in choosing partners for the village under the Public Private Partnership model.
Delighted over the decision, the Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (FHAN) is eagerly awaiting the Government’s future strategy in this connection.
Earlier, FHAN planned to establish a handicraft village with 20 products and one cluster, with 20 enterprises dedicated to each of the product.
According to the plan, the clusters would have had units for silk and woollen carpets, handloom and pashmina, traditional garments prepared from natural fabric and a supplementary factory for making accessories required to make handicraft items.
In a bid to upgrade the domestic handicraft sector, the Nepal Business Forum evolved with a concept of Eco Park. Meanwhile, the private sector came up with a proposal for developing an international convention centre and handicraft village along with suggestions for locations and estimated cost.
Nepal each year exports handicrafts worth Np Rs. 3 billion directly and another Rs. 4 billion worth of handicrafts are exported indirectly.
FHAN has chosen India as its partner this year, as it believes there is vast scope for promoting Nepali handicrafts in Indian market.
