US-based Michael Foods has announced plans to shut down an egg processing facility in Winona County, Minnesota in about six months, a move which will lead to 40 job losses.
The company gained ownership of the facility through its subsidiary M.G. Waldbaum which acquired the Altura plant as part of its acquisition of Primera Foods for $35.7m, earlier this year. The purchase also included a manufacturing facility in Britt, Iowa.

Michael Foods communications vice president Diane Sparish was quoted by the Winona Daily News as saying that the decision was made after the company conducted a review of the business.
The affected employees will be provided assistance during the transition including severance pay and retention incentives.
Michael Foods, based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, is a producer and distributor of food products to the foodservice, retail and food ingredient markets. The company's product range includes value-added egg products, refrigerated potato products, cheese and other dairy products.
