The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted a patent to Atlantic Pharma for its SMART/Script abuse deterrent drug delivery system.
Designed to thwart dose dumping of orally delivered prescription opioids, the new drug delivery system may confiscate and decrease drug discharge of a pharmaceutical that has been subjected to various physical tampering methods.
Making a dosage form more difficult to manipulate and mistreat through unintended routes of administration, SMART/Script is capable to considerably impact prescription drug misuse, claims the pharma company.
Atlantic Pharma president Anthony Soscia said that based on its potential to retard or delay a drug's release rate when physically disrupted, the firm believes that a SMART/Script enabled dosage form could serve an important role in decreasing the epidemic prescription drug abuse problem.
SMART/Script has been designed to enhance the difficulty of extracting a drug out of an oral dosage form and to prevent the misuse of medications through known routes of abuse or misuse, including chewing, snorting, and injecting.
