The China's State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) has granted marketing clearance for Varian Medical Systems' UNIQUE radiotherapy system in China.
The UNIQUE system available in two configurations, UNIQUE Performance Edition and UNIQUE Power Edition, is indicated for treating cancer of the head and neck, breast, cervix, lung, prostate, and other tumors.
The medical linear accelerator is a single-energy machine designed for treating cancer by delivering intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and RapidArc treatments, which target tumors while minimizing exposure of surrounding healthy tissues.
Varian Oncology Systems business head in Asia Tom Duffy said epidemiological data show that more than 2.2 million new cancer cases are diagnosed in China each year.
"In recognition of the challenge, the Chinese Ministry of Health has announced a dramatic increase in the number of licenses available to hospitals for the purchase of additional accelerators," Duffy added.
"Varian created the UNIQUE system to help address the need for greater access to care in China and other parts of the world."
The low-energy (6MV) radiotherapy system can be outfitted with high-tech image-guidance, beam shaping, and RapidArc technology for rapid treatment delivery, according to Varian.
The system features Eclipse treatment planning software, offering clinicians a workflow for planning and delivering advanced radiotherapy treatments.
