Nokia Siemens Networks is looking to sell its business support systems (BSS) unit to focus on its mobile broadband network equipment division.
According to several reports – including Reuters and the Wall Street Journal – chief executive Rajeev Suri confirmed Nokia Siemens Networks was in talks with various companies to sell the BSS division, but declined to name any interested parties.
The move follows Nokia Siemens selling its WiMax technology to NewNet Communication Technologies in November 2011. The wireless technology failed to attract interest from carriers who had focused more intently on the alternative technology, namely, 4G LTE.
Reports claim that Suri described the six divestments that have already taken place as “either not core to our mobile broadband or we see that the profitability is not where we want it to be".
Nokia Siemens was set up following a joint venture in 2007, between the Finnish Nokia Corp and Germany’s Siemens AG. Just over a year ago, Nokia and Siemens invested €1bn in the joint venture to strengthen its financial position.
In May, the Nokia Siemens launched its new Flexi Multiradio CDMA base station which claimed to help operators save costs in moving to a 4G LTE network. The company wishes to put all future efforts into similar network equipment innovation to increase profits.
